New skills, creative encounters, and greater confidence in digital work – Kateřina Puchmertlová
Kateřina Puchmertlová studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design Prague (UMPRUM) and participated in the FashionTEX Riga Makerspace 2026. During the two intensive weeks, she worked with 3D software and AI tools, honed her digital skills, and learned to better manage her time on a complex creative project. Collaborating with other talented students, making new contacts, and witnessing the step-by-step creation of a complete outfit were particularly significant experiences for her.
Kateřina, what new skills or insights did you gain at the Makerspace?
For me, learning to manage my time was a particularly important experience. With so many different tasks and new possibilities, I had to learn how to organize my work effectively and set priorities.
Was there a specific moment when you thought, “This is a real ‘aha’ moment”?
Actually, there wasn’t a single moment I would describe as a classic “aha” moment. The overall experience and the opportunity to explore different working methods and technologies were far more significant.
Did you make new contacts with other students or universities at the Makerspace?
Yes, absolutely. I met some wonderful people. Meeting and exchanging ideas with the other students was a crucial part of the Makerspace experience for me.
What was the biggest personal challenge you faced while working at the Makerspace—and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was my limited computer skills. I tackled this by learning, experimenting, and—above all—asking for help whenever I needed it.
As a result, I was able to significantly improve my digital skills during the Makerspace.
What key insights did you gain while working on your avatar or outfit?
For me, one of the most important insights was that my computer and digital skills improved. Through the hands-on work on the project, I was able to try things out directly and become more confident in using the programs.
Was there a moment that particularly surprised or inspired you in a positive way?
I found collaborating with other talented people particularly inspiring. Seeing how they work, the ideas they develop, and the different ways they approach their projects was very enriching for me.
Which technical tools did you use the most, and what did you learn from using them?
I worked primarily with 3D programs and AI tools. Working hands-on with them allowed me to improve my computer skills and gain more confidence in using digital tools.
Which result of your work at the Riga Makerspace are you particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud to see the entire outfit as a finished whole. It was a great feeling to experience how the various stages of work and ideas finally came together to create a finished result.
How would you like to proceed after the Makerspace?
I would love to participate in another project like this. The experience showed me just how much one can learn and experiment with in an international, creative environment.
Are there any ideas or projects you would like to develop further?
Yes. I can certainly imagine applying the experience I gained in Riga to future projects and further developing my newly acquired skills.
What was the greatest personal benefit you gained from your time at the Makerspace?
My greatest personal benefit was seeing the work of others and learning new skills myself. Exchanging ideas with other creatives opened up new perspectives for me and, at the same time, motivated me to further develop my own skills.
