Katriin Tammoja – Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Textile Design in the FashionTEX Program

Katriin Tammoja is a second-year student in the Textile Design bachelor’s program at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Her artistic practice focuses on materiality, textile processes, and contemporary design approaches. She combines traditional craftsmanship with experimental methods, taking a particular interest in how textiles can convey stories, identities, and personal experiences.

Katriin draws inspiration for her work from the symbolism of traditional Estonian folk costumes. As the use of these materials and symbolic elements has declined significantly in everyday life, she aims to translate them into a modern context and make them tangible once again for the present day.

Through her projects, Katriin explores how traditional symbols and natural materials can be reinterpreted through contemporary textile design. By combining cultural heritage with innovative design approaches, she creates a dialogue between the past and the present, demonstrating how textile design can preserve traditions while simultaneously opening up new forms of expression for today’s society.
