Material experiments and contemporary textile design in the FashionTEX program

Ethel Noortoots is a Bachelor’s student of Textile Design at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Her work explores the intersection of material experimentation, craft techniques, and contemporary textile design.

As part of the Clo basic course, she developed designs combining machine knitting with natural dyeing processes. The resulting pieces include a machine-knitted top and a skirt dyed with mushroom-based pigments, featuring a surface enhanced by laser-engraved patterns inspired by mycelial structures.

Through these works, Ethel makes visible the relationship between textiles, natural processes, and organic forms. At the same time, she examines the dialogue between technology, traditional craftsmanship, and ecological materials, demonstrating how these diverse approaches can be integrated within contemporary textile design.
