The Shape of Staying: Architecture of Perseverance

*The Shape of Staying* is a visual exploration of the subtle ways in which body and mind adapt to constant discipline, control, and the recurring rhythms of functioning within a system. Inspired by historical forms of physical discipline—specifically uniforms and corsets—as well as urban minimalism, the collection views the body as a functional extension of architecture: structured, controlled, and conditioned to remain stable.

At the heart of the project lies the psychological state of an internal “autopilot,” a mechanism activated to endure an environment that demands absolute constancy. Emotions are locked away, while behavior becomes increasingly mechanical and neutral. The garments give physical form to this restraint through rigid silhouettes, indentations in the fabric, and internal corset structures.

Clothing thus becomes an “internal technology of endurance”—simultaneously a protective armor and a physical constraint. It prevents the body from collapsing while simultaneously limiting its freedom of movement.

The choice of materials further reinforces this architectural aesthetic. Heavy, stiff wool forms the coat, creating a monumental silhouette that conveys protection and a sense of being shielded from the outside world. Sturdy denim is used for the corset and reappears in details of the coat, internal constructions, and the lining. Reflective elements—individually hand-cut with soldered edges—create cool, architectural reflections that contrast with the dense textiles.

The surfaces themselves become structural elements. Dense quilting and specialized relief stitching create raised, three-dimensional lines reminiscent of physical pressure points and indentations on the body. Traditional pattern cutting, draping, and corset-making are combined with experimental toile development and manual craftsmanship.

Digital technology extends this process through the use of CLO 3D. There, asymmetrical cuts, panel seams, fabric behavior, and volumetric balance can be tested virtually before physical production begins. This dialogue between digital and material construction makes it possible to further refine the collection’s rigid architecture while simultaneously reducing material waste.

Ultimately, *The Shape of Staying* suggests that the pressure we carry within us may only become visible when the protective shell is broken open and deconstructed—allowing the individual to find their way back to themselves.
