Taking Up Space: When Volume Becomes Posture

With “Taking Up Space,” Lovre Lalicic explores how fashion can make strength, vulnerability, and self-assertion visible. At the heart of the work is a dramatic silhouette that consciously claims space.

The project fuses precise tailoring with soft, expressive forms. It begins with a clearly structured silhouette that is disrupted by exaggerated proportions and fluid movement. Particularly striking are the voluminous, sculptural sleeves, which symbolize the expansion of identity and emotion.

This bold design language is driven by a clear concept: claiming space without the need for justification. A sharply defined waist provides the body with support and structure, while the fluid lower section introduces movement and dynamism to the look. This creates a compelling interplay between control and freedom, discipline and expression.

An all-black color palette reinforces this focus. Silhouette, texture, and proportion take center stage, displacing color. The result is a look that is simultaneously powerful, mysterious, and understated—where individuality emerges primarily through presence. The choice of materials further enhances the sculptural quality.

American organza or liquid organza lend volume and movement to the sleeves, while cotton poplin or cotton twill are used for the more structured sections. Internal reinforcements ensure the exaggerated shapes hold their form while remaining wearable.

Additionally, Lalicic plans to combine traditional tailoring techniques with 3D-printed elements. These can serve as lightweight internal supports or visible structural details, further accentuating the design’s architectural character.
In this way, “Taking Up Space” transforms volume into an attitude—a silhouette that does not recede, but instead consciously uses its presence to express identity.
