Bioluminescent Jellyfish: When fashion starts to glow

With “Bioluminescent Jellyfish,” Kostiantyn Polonskyi fuses nature, technology, and experimental fashion. Inspired by the jellyfish, the design creates a look that combines movement, transparency, and light into an almost living silhouette.

At the heart of the project lies the jellyfish—characterized by its fluid form, weightlessness, and natural bioluminescence. Polonskyi translates these qualities into a garment designed not merely to be worn, but to behave like an autonomous organism.

The silhouette deliberately plays with contrasts. A form-fitting base meets voluminous sleeves and long, fluid ribbons reminiscent of tentacles. While the snug foundation provides structure to the body, the expansive elements evoke a sense of movement and lightness. A deep blue color palette captures the atmosphere of the marine world.

The choice of materials also aligns with this concept. Silk forms the base of the dress, ensuring a fluid drape and a subtle sheen. Organza is used for the sheer sleeves and long ribbons, while rigilene and flexible wires shape the fabric, enabling organic, wave-like movements. Technological implementation plays a pivotal role.

Laser-cut patterns echo the internal structures of a jellyfish, giving the dress the appearance of an independent biological system. LEDs integrated between the layers of organza create a luminous effect that mimics the natural bioluminescence of marine organisms.

The light appears to emanate from within the garment, shifting its effect in response to movement. This creates a silhouette that exists somewhere between body, sculpture, and glowing organism.

“Bioluminescent Jellyfish” demonstrates how fashion—through light, digital fabrication, and textile construction—can become an intersection of nature, art, and technology.
